Smoking Prevention In Elementary Schools Of Portland, Oregon

HH Member Dr. John Ng displays a model of a mouth diseased by smoking at a presentation to students at The International School in Portland.

Local Partner: Health for Humanity Portland Network
Project Initiated: 2006
Project Goal:To educate greater Portland area children as to the hazards of tobacco use.

Project Summary:
The 2006-07 school year marked the launch of the Portland Smoking Prevention Project. Some initial funds were put into purchasing the required props, an initial training meeting was held to train members in how to present the program, initial contacts were made with some area schools and we were off and running.

During the past school year our anti-tobacco presentations reached 40 children at The International School in Portland, close to this number of 5th graders at the Sunnyside school in Portland plus a recent presentation just last week to students at a school in NW Portland, plus a presentation to 75 7th and 8th graders at Carlton School just west of Newberg.  This totals over 150 students having participated in the program thus far in just our 1st year.  This also totals at least 11 classes and their teachers who have participated in the program.  Teachers are asked to fill out an evaluation of the program after each presentation.  We are interested in getting the children/youth involved further by offering a poster contest after the presentations coordinated by their teachers and also offering anti-tobacco related prizes.

Initial feedback from students and teachers has been very positive and it is our desire to continue our efforts at the schools where the program has been established thus strengthening those partnerships and to expand our vision by including other schools in the Portland metro area and outlying areas as well.
