Local Partner: Health for Humanity Ohio Network
Project Initiated: 1999
Project Goal: Decrease the number of elementary school students who initiate smoking and alcohol use.
Project Summary: Over the eight years of the project’s existence, the lecture series, “Harmful Effect of Smoking and Drinking Alcohol on the Body” has reached 17,800 students. Each year about 1,800 students participate. About 200 students enter the Smoking Prevention Poster Contest. This contest helps the students reinforce and integrate the message by using art and creativity to deter smoking and alcohol use.
In addition, in 2003, an HH Ohio Network member presented these Smoking & Alcohol Prevention lectures to young students in Mongolia. A total of 14 lectures were offered to 850 students and 40 doctors. The Mongolian Ministry of Health is investigating the use of the HH program for the schools’ health education system. The program's curriculum has also been shared with HH's partners in Cameroon for possible use with their community's youth.
