Local Partner: West Town Neighborhood Health Center
Project Initiated: 1998
Project Goal:Improve wellness for children of recent immigrant families served by a Chicago public health clinic by promoting reading-readiness.
Project Summary: The Rx: ABC Project, housed in the West Town Neighborhood Health Center, is designed to promote reading-readiness in children before they enter the school system. Project volunteers read to children and demonstrate positive reading habits to parents while the families wait for their physician appointments. Thousands of books have been distributed that have enabled tens of thousands of book-sharing experiences in the health center. Overall, Rx: ABC has experienced increased family literacy, increased library and Bookmobile usage, personnel development, and an increase in the amount of used books distributed during reading clubs. The project serves over 3,000 children and families and distributes more than 1,500 books every year. This project is an accredited participant in the national Reach Out and Read program.
