Member Service Activities
A group of committed individuals can accomplish far more united than alone.
By becoming a member, you make a commitment to supporting the mission and vision of HH. Health for Humanity members support HH through organizational and health promotion activities, project service, and financial contributions. Members find avenues of service as individuals, through regional networks or as volunteers on international projects.
Domestic Service Activities
Health for Humanity is starting a new initiative to increase the domestic health service activities of its members. “How To” manuals and support information for many of these activities are available through the national HH office. If you are interested in organizing a health promotion activity in your community, please call or email the office today.
Here are three kinds of HH domestic health promotion service opportunities:
- Health awareness: small activities which promote awareness and education in easy and enjoyable ways.
- Health education: workshop or classroom style activities with teaching and learning as the main focus.
- Health outreach: drives or fairs that promote healthy behaviors.
"How-to" Manuals for sample activities are located on our Resources Page. You can download PDF copies of the manuals there.
To get involved in any Member Service Activities, please submit the Volunteer Form. If you are inetrested in organizing an event or want more information please contact us at information@healthforhumanity.org or 847-425-7900.
Health For Humanity Task Forces
A Taskforce is a consultative body of Health for Humanity members with expertise in the program area that provides technical support and guidance to projects through close collaboration with HH office staff. To be considered for membership in a Task Force, please contact the HH office.

Health For Humanity International and Domestic Projects
Service in Health for Humanity’s domestic and international projects provides the opportunity for HH members to use their skills and talents to support the development of HH projects, to learn about new communities and cultures, and to foster the spirit of service that underlies HH’s guiding principles. The role of HH members in international and domestic projects may involve:
Technical training such as medical, surgical, or rehabilitative techniques
Mentoring youth and children to promote their health and wellbeing
Consultation on project development and institutional growth to identify creative solutions to challenges and enhance learning experiences
Loving encouragement and support of the work of Health For Humanity’s partners
Host an “Introduction to Health for Humanity” Event in your Community
The most important resource HH has to achieve our mission is the relationships we form with individuals, organizations, and institutions around the world. Through these relationships HH learns from others in the field, shares information and resources, and develops supporters and advocacy for world health issues. HH members can support the development of relationships on behalf of HH through hosting information sessions in the local community. HH will provide materials, a short presentation, and a Board or Staff member to attend the event.
Study the Health For Humanity Health Development Workbook
The HH training workbook contains several modules on the principles and vision, project development process, and service opportunities available through membership in HH. The workbook is intended to be used as a catalyst for conversation and consultation in small group settings, and to lead to identification of service activities for groups and individuals. It is an interactive and interesting way to learn more about HH and share experiences with others who are committed to advancing world health.
Health For Humanity Conferences
Health for Humanity offers an annual national conference to provide an opportunity for members and friends to build the skills needed for effective participation and leadership in health development projects. Each conference’s theme reflects the interests and areas for growth of HH’s members, as identified by the Conference Planning Task Force. In February 2006, Health for Humanity members, supporters and friends gathered in Tucson, Arizona, to attend the Annual HH Conference. The conference was hosted by the Arizona HH Network. They organized the venue, volunteered at the conference, and planned the benefit dinner honoring Tucson community member Dr James Klein. The theme this year was Uniting People in Service: Transforming Reflection into Action. The presentations and discussions shed light on this topic from many different disciplines.
Health For Humanity Networks
Regional networks consist of a group of HH members within a locality that choose to work together to improve the health of their communities. They provide:
- Channels for the individual initiative of each Health for Humanity member.
- Support for Health for Humanity programs through recruiting new members and assisting in fund raising.
The regional networks provide opportunities for interchange of thought and working with community groups to inspire, channel, encourage, and implement service projects focused on health. Within the United States, Health for Humanity projects are non-clinical and focused primarily on health promotion and wellness activities. In 2005-06 there were active Networks in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Phoenix/Tucson, Arizona; Durham/Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Metro Washington, DC; Youngstown, Ohio; Portland, Oregon; and Southern California. To be connected with a Network in your area, or to start one yourself, please contact the HH office.
Health For Humanity Fundraisers Each of these can be replicated by HH members and networks around the country
"How-to" Manuals for sample activities are located on our Resources Page. You can download PDF copies of the manuals there.
Health For Humanity National Shirt of Honor: Every summer HH members around the country sponsor the names of their friends, family, and mentors to be listed on HH’s annual t-shirt. The t-shirt is then mailed to everyone sponsored on the shirt, providing a great opportunity to talk about HH’s commitment to service in the world.
Chicago Opera Gala: Each year, HH hosts a gala evening of the arts in celebration of HH’s projects and honors a Chicago area woman or man who has made a significant contribution to the expression of HH’s principles in civic life.
Chicago Health For Humanity Golf Outing: In June, Chicago area golfers tee up in support of HH. The golf tournament consists of a 4-person scramble (good for all skill levels!) and includes a long drive hole and a closest-to-the-pin Par 3. Afterwards, the golfers gather in the clubhouse for lunch.
Chicago Bowling Breakfast: In August, HH goes bowling with a great event combining unlimited family bowling, a spectacular silent auction donated by area businesses, and a brunch cooked up by HH’s volunteer chefs. This fun family event is also the launch for each year’s new HH Shirt of Honor.
Annual Garage Sale: Every year a group of dedicated HH supporters in Highland Park, Illinois host a neighborhood garage sale which, in addition to raising funds for HH projects, also promotes HH’s values and model and attracts new supporters.
DC Membership and Fundraising Dinner: Each fall, members of the HH Metro Washington DC Network host an evening of education and entertainment, featuring updates on HH projects, a silent auction, and an opportunity for friends and colleagues to join HH.
